Thunder Tea Rice (Joo Chiat)

By Kawayama

I was in Joo Chiat area with mum and we finally visited the thunder tea rice flagship store! Actually mum was the one who suggested having the rice dish and it came as a surprise to me as she is never interested in thunder tea rice whenever I had it. Guess she suggested that to me since I’m a big fan of it and also because I can’t eat any heaty food.

So what exactly is thunder tea rice? Below is some information taken from Thunder Tea Rice’s website :

Thunder tea rice is a rice dish that you will either love it or hate it. After all, not many people is used to the idea of mixing green tea with rice and vegetables. Carnivores are definitely not interested as there is no meat in the dish. It could taste a little bland so those who preferred strong flavors will probably need a few more mouthfuls to get used to it. There is also the strong flavor of basil and traces of mint found in the dish so haters of basil and mint are not going to enjoy it.

There is only a couple dining in the restaurant when we entered the eatery. But there are a few people who ordered takeaway of their thunder tea rice.

There is a set menu for two people available which include two servings of thunder tea rice, a stir-fry dish of either squid, prawns or chicken with basil and oyster omelette. But I am more interested in their “value set meal” which is thunder tea rice with a piece of Hakka-style fried tofu and omelette.

Their deep-fried tofu is my must-order-side-dish whenever I visited the thunder tea rice store as the tofu is nicely fried and the well-marinated minced chicken smeared on top of the tofu creates a beautiful combination of flavors for the side dish. Not exactly a fan of omelette but I quite enjoy my omelette. Mum finds the omelette a little bland but that’s because she prefers strong flavored food.

Thunder Tea Rice

This is my serving of thunder tea rice! I ordered the large serving (additional $1) as I’m famished. There are options of changing the white rice to brown rice or you can order their thunder tea rice noodles. I love the different texture of the ingredients combined together so each bite of the thunder tea rice is interesting. The standard of the thunder tea rice remains and the presentation of the dish is beautiful! I love how the flavor of each ingredient comes together and they compliment each other very well. Mum does not really like thunder tea rice as she finds the rice dish a tad too bland and she is not a fan of basil.

There are other dishes available so you can try other dishes if thunder tea rice is not your ideal choice. I will definitely be back to check out for more thunder tea rice very soon, maybe I will order a plate of Hakka deep fried tofu to go with my rice dish. One piece of deep fried tofu is not enough!
